They chose Angus for Newlyn Park because of the breed’s versatility, fertility, maternal ability, meat quality and efficiency. It is a compelling combination, when it’s added to high EBVs, excellent structure, and great temperament.

Gavin says the breed ticks all the boxes for him.

“Black cattle do make more money. People can say what they like, but you have many more options with black cattle. You can sell them every day of the week across the board.

“The biggest beef populations in favourable areas of Australia are Angus. And, that’s because they are fertile, moderately-sized functional cattle with excellent carcass traits.

“Importantly too, there is a huge gene pool for Angus, which is supported by large amounts of reliable data.”
