Embryo transfer hastens progress

Newlyn Park’s comfort level in the ET and AI conversations comes from its 230-cow dairy operation, Newlyn Park Holsteins. The dairy is a Holstein Australia Master breeder herd, with a strong national presence.

The dairy industry has long been extremely active in ET and AI, and it has historically given equal credit to maternal and paternal breeding lines.

Gavin has deliberately carried this philosophy through to Newlyn Park’s beef operation – giving it an important edge. Their foundation seedstock females were initially sourced from K.O. (NSW), Te Mania (VIC), Raff (King Island), and Stoney Point (SA). They have also included AI sires from Australia, North America and New Zealand.

“Because we were pretty experienced in AI and ET work, we worked pretty hard with those cows, and got a lot of ET calves on the ground using our commercial cows as the recipients,” Gavin said.

“I’m always aware of also including exceptional females in our herd, because I believe it brings a great deal to the operation when you have predictable maternal lines too.”
